There will be a '1' next to the friends tab when they are online but nothing in the actual list. I have tried unfriending a refriending them but they still never show up.

Steam EA Play needs Origin "Thin" Client which launcher Steam and again it doesn't use Origin "Original" Client at all. You don't get to choose what's what.
